Marketing concept

There is a lot of confusion about marketing and what it entails.  Is it Public Relations? Is it research and segmentation of target markets? Is it direct mail campaigns? Is it a Google adwords campaign?  Is it branding?
The answer is it is all this and more.  A better way of defining marketing is not by its specialised areas or tools but as an orientation or philosophy within a business or organisation.
The marketing concept as we know and implement it is best expressed as

“the achievement of corporate goals through meeting and exceeding customer needs better than the competition”
David Jobber

Marketing then is about

  • Making a profit
  • Providing the customer with what s/he needs or wants
  • Doing this better than the competition.

The success and sustainability of your business depends on you achieving all of these 3 goals. You must make a profit by providing something of value to your target market.  Hence you must know your target market and what they want.  And once you know what they want, you must do the service/product better than your competition.

Marketing mix

If you are selling a product, your marketing mix is consists of the fundamental elements – known as the 4 P’s

  • Product – what product or service you provide
  • Price -  what is your price/pricing structure
  • Promotion – advertising, personal selling, sales promotions, public relations
  • Place – how you are going to distribute your product/service.

If you are selling a service, you have 7 Ps to mix up including the previous 4 and 3 more!

  • People – the people providing your service
  • Physical evidence – the environment in which the service is delivered
  • Process – the procedures and mechanisms of selling your service
